Biography

  • English by birth, Ian Thubron graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in history in 1987 and joined JP Morgan in New York. He then joined advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi in London in 1988. In 1991, Ian moved to Asia and spent 24 years in a variety of operational and regional management roles, living and working in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. In early 2015 Ian re-located to Perth and established AsiaStrategies.

Business Highlights

  • Organic growth - In 1999 Ian founded M&C Saatchi in Hong Kong, tripled the agency in size and expanded organically from Hong Kong to Shanghai, Beijing and Taipei.

  • Acquisitions - As Executive Vice President of TBWA\Asia Pacific (2004-10) Ian led acquisitions in China, Vietnam and India, established a Joint Venture in Pakistan and Branded Affiliations in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

  • Start-ups - as President, TBWA\Greater China (2010-14) Ian established three new companies in China and Taiwan, grew revenue 250%, turned a loss into a significant profit, and with 750 people became the 5th largest region in TBWA\ globally.

  • Experience - Ian's sector experience covers Travel & Tourism, Hospitality, Auto, Financial Services, Luxury, Business to Business, Consumer Goods, Retail, Technology. Ian has worked with major Multinational, Asian and Local companies.

Extra-curricular

  • Ian is a founding member of Young President's Organisation (YPO) Pan Asia Chapter; member of YPO Western Australia Chapter; previous member of YPO's South East Asian Leadership Board.

  • Ian was Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Advertising Association and a past Chairman of the Hong Kong EFFIES (Marketing Effectiveness). Ian was named a "Face to Watch" in Asia by Campaign Magazine in 2003.

  • Ian is a Mentor on the VOCUS Upstart Incubator programme.

  • Ian is a member of the global Advisory Board to in/PACT, charitable giving technology platform.

  • Ian is a Commissioner on the Board of Tourism Western Australia, and sits on the Strategic Marketing Committee and Events Committee. Ian also sits on the boards of D’Orsogna and Good Samaritan Industries.
